"And then what happened?"

"Well, he was apprehended at the Mexican border, heading down there to take care of Sage once and for all."

"Thank God he was caught!" Raine gasped, and then shook her head. "So where are Sage and Ben now?"

"Operating a home for orphaned kids in San Diego," he told her, placing his hand at the small of her back and leading her out the door. "Happily married with a whole brood they call their own."

"I love a happy ending," she said, and Ray took her hand into his and raised it, planting a kiss just above her center knuckle. He didn't tell her so, but Ray promised himself just then to create a happy ending she would be proud of. One where the boy and girl lived happily ever after. He wasn't entirely sure how to go about it, of course, but he was determined to make it happen just the same.

The night air was crisp, and Raine seemed to like it that way. Ray watched her as she closed her eyes and inhaled, taking it into her lungs as far as it would go.

"I had no idea it got so chilly in Dallas," she told him as he joined her on the curb.

"Yeah, it can get icy here during winter. Are you ready to go back to the hotel?"

"Yes." She nodded and timidly took his hand as he offered it. "Oh!" she cried suddenly, stopping in her tracks. "Ray, I forgot my sunglasses on the table."

"I'll go get them. You stay back near the lobby."

She walked back to the entrance with him and released his hand as he headed in the door.

"May I pull your car around for you, sir?" the valet asked.

"No, thanks. I parked in the lot."

"I wouldn't mind, just the same."

Ray thought it over a moment, and then nodded, tossing him the keys. "It's the white Miata down the last row."

He shot Raine a wink, then headed inside as the young boy ran off eagerly toward the parking lot. It took only moments for Ray to reappear, Raine's sunglasses in hand and an eager smile across his face.

"I ate way too much." He grinned, then patted his stomach.

Their smiles disintegrated, falling down their faces like shattered glass as time began to move in slow motion. A piercing blast drew all eyes toward the edge of the parking lot.

"Raine!" Ray called, and he looked up to see pure and certain terror wash over her in a riptide wave.

Splinters of glass careened through the air in a hundred different directions, and fire blasted 50 feet into the sky in thick, black billows.

"My God!" Raine screamed, and Ray's arms drew her to him, then over his body and down to the ground where he formed a cape over her like a pup tent. "Ray!!" she shouted, her face hard against the pavement. "Our car!"

Ray peered over his shoulder in horror at the site of the explosion, still smoothing his hand in repeated patterns across Raine's trembling back. Dozens of voices came together in the air around them.
